Ernie-"Did you hear the one about the lady who took her sick mouse to the veterinarian?" This, Alan's famous CAT scan joke, is one of my favorites, taught to me by your father, and repeated by him many times (which is why I can remember it, since I otherwise have no capacity for remembering jokes). And every time I heard it it I got a real chuckle out of it, in no small measure from enjoying how much Alan always enjoyed telling it. You put it beautifully: your father was a character and a man of great character. His son has done him proud.

To Arnie--I of course knew your father, just as I have known you since you were a small boy at Congregation Emanu-el, and my memories of his kindness and his love for music are strong. But I wish to share words of my late mother, a teacher, as you may remember, who often welcomed your father into her classroom at the Elwood School in Oaklane. Your father, she said, transformed the children. Music came alive. From my mother, who took me to the Philadelphia Orchestra for the first time when I was only four years old, and whose joy was playing her own baby grand piano, these were words with serious weight. May your father's memory be a blessed one,

As one who had the pleasure of knowing and loving Alan Eisen, as his nephew, I can attest to the strength and solidity that emanated from his character -- as well as those wonderful, zany and very repeatable jokes! He was a one of a kind "natural". Thank you for sharing his influence in your life, Arnie, so beautifully and eloquently.

Thank you for this wonderful memory. I am struck by the important role that fathers play, not only as role models but as our mentors. I am sure that all of us are in the position to mentor not only our sons but the others in our workplaces and our communities as well.

It is terrific to see such a heartfelt and personal tribute on the Chancellor's blog. I'd love to see more!

Thank you for the wonderful tribute. My father, Joseph Spevack z”l, also has yahrzeit this month (4 Shevat) and many of the things you mentioned struck a chord. He spent 40 years in the pulpit and his passion was teaching. In retirement he completed 2 full cycles of Daf Yomi, reminding me always that learning and growing never ends.

Beautiful remarks Arnie and brought back memories of Alan, from havurah events, or when he joined us for seder, or whenever he was here and we would see him in shul. He always had a sparkle in his eye and a joke at the ready. You once told me that just as he was a traveling salesman, so were you--just you were selling different things. yehi zichro baruch.
